Western taste added to Chinese palette
To celebrate the Chinese cultural year in Italy this wonderful exhibition pays homage to the great masters of modern Chinese paintings.
Beyond the Traditional is made up of 100 works borrowed from the National Art Museum of China.
These works were created between 1850 and 1950, a century that coincides with the introduction and spread of Western artistic techniques, such as perspective, chiaroscuro and oil painting, but still retaining rich traditions of Chinese painting.
The exhibition is divided into three sections: Portraits, flowers and birds, and landscapes. It shows how Chinese masters, fascinated by Western techniques, interpreted and reused the knowledge of western figurative arts to influence traditional Chinese style.
This event offers a comprehensive image of the artistic production of modern Chinese painting through the works of the most representative Chinese painters between tradition and modernity.
A highlight of the show is the work of Chinese master Qi Baishi (pictured above).
