Tropical storm Sergio forms off Mexico's Pacific coast

MEXICO CITY - Tropical storm Sergio has formed in the Mexican Pacific coast to the southwest of the southern port city of Acapulco, said Mexico's National Meteorological Service (SMN) on Saturday.

According to the report, Sergio is presenting maximum wind speeds of around 65 kilometers per hour and gusts of 85 kilometers per hour, moving parallely to Mexico's Pacific coast.

At 10:30 am local time (1530 GMT), Sergio was located 555 kilometers southwest of Acapulco, Guerrero state.

The SMN expects strong winds in the neighboring states of Michoacan and Oaxaca.

According to SMN, Sergio will intensify in strength and become a Category 1 hurricane in the early hours of October 1 when off the western coast of Colima.

At no point will Sergio move inland.

Meanwhile, on the Baja California peninsula in northwest Mexico, preparations are being made for the impact of tropical storm Rosa on October 1.

The federal government announced setting 700 shelters in the states of Baja California and Baja California Sur, which can hold up to 180,000 people if required.

The SMN predicts Rosa will cross the peninsula and move through the Gulf of California where it will make land again, northwest of Sonora state, before dissipating in the US state of Arizona on October 2.
