HK affairs authority slams US passage of bill on HK

A spokesman for the Hong Kong affairs authority on Wednesday expressed strong indignation and firm opposition to the US House of Representatives' passing of the so-called Hong Kong Human Rights and Democracy Act 2019.

Regardless of repeatedly strong opposition from the Chinese government, the US House of Representatives passed the act on Oct 15. Such a practice wantonly interferes in China's internal affairs and openly encourages the opposition and radical forces in Hong Kong, said Yang Guang, a spokesman for the Hong Kong and Macao Affairs Office of the State Council.

The passing of the act exposes the political plot by the US House of Representatives and some US politicians to contain the development of China by playing Hong Kong as a card, he said in a statement.

He said the recent violence by radical forces in Hong Kong, such as attacking the police, beating local residents holding different views, damaging public facilities and hampering traffic, have severely harmed public order and security, and infringed upon the basic rights of the Hong Kong people in personal security and free speech. However, the US House of Representatives and some politicians are turning a blind eye to these and even confounding right with wrong.

Yang called on the US side to fully respect truth and immediately stop subsequent procedures for the act. "Without the interference of the US, Hong Kong will be more prosperous and stable," he said.
