Johns Hopkins tally of COVID-19 cases corrected after miscalculation

Johns Hopkins University had quickly adjusted its tally for COVID-19 confirmed cases in the United States from the previous 682,619 cases to 581,918 as of Tuesday morning.

Media around the world were surprised to find the cases in the US had jumped by over 120,000 in the past day when citing figures from the university. The correct figure was around 26,641. The cause of the miscalculation is not explained.

The World Health Organization said there are more than 1.78 million confirmed cases in 213 countries and regions as of Tuesday morning.

The university's COVID-19 dashboard map for the US is led the Johns Hopkins Centers for Civic Impact, with participation from the Applied Physics Laboratory, Bloomberg School of Public Health, and Whiting School of Engineering.?

The data are updated manually and are sourced from international and regional health departments including the WHO, centers for disease control and prevention in China, US, and Europe, as well as local media reports and other statistical platforms.
