Mainland reports 5 new COVID-19 cases

A total of five new confirmed cases of novel coronavirus infection were reported Saturday on the Chinese mainland, bringing the number up to 82,947, along with no fatalities, according to the National Health Commission.

Northeast China's Jilin province reported three locally transmitted cases, along with South China's Guangdong province and Tianjin each detecting one overseas infection, bringing the imported case tally to 1,700 as of Saturday midnight, the commission said.

Of the 1,700 imported cases, 44 patients were still under treatment, including three severe cases, while a total of 1,656 patients had been discharged from the hospital after recovery by the end of Saturday, with no deaths reported.

Also on Saturday, eight people were discharged from the hospital after recovery, while the number of severe cases stood at 10. A total of 78,227 people had been discharged from the hospital after recovery as of Saturday midnight.

With another two suspected case reported Saturday, a total of four, all of which are imported, people are still suspected of being infected with the virus, the commission added.

Health authorities said 4,724 close contacts were still under medical observation. On Saturday, 633 people were discharged from medical observation.

The Chinese mainland also reported 12 new asymptomatic cases on Saturday, along with 58 discharged from medical observation. So far, a total of 515 asymptomatic patients infected with the virus are still under medical observation, according to the commission.

By the end of Saturday, 1,052 confirmed cases, including four deaths, had been reported in Hong Kong, 45 confirmed cases in Macao, and 440 in Taiwan, including seven deaths. And 1,022 patients in Hong Kong, 44 in Macao and 389 in Taiwan have been discharged from the hospital after recovery.
