Number of Chinese employed stands at 770 million

The number of employed people in China stood at 770 million by the end of 2019, with the proportion of the tertiary industry rising to 47.4 percent.

Among them, the population of urban employment reached 440 million, according to data released by the Ministry of Human Resources and Social Security.

The primary, secondary and tertiary industries accounted for 25.1 percent, 27.5 percent and 47.4 percent of the total employed people, respectively.

According to the ministry, people employed in the tertiary industry saw growth for the fifth consecutive year, up five percentage points from 2015.

Last year, the number of rural migrant workers totaled 290 million, among which 120 million were local, up 0.7 percent or 820,000 from the previous year, and 170 million went outside, up 0.9 percent or 1.59 million from the previous year.

In 2019, the income from basic old-age insurance, unemployment insurance and work injury compensation insurance rose 3.6 percent or 204 billion yuan year-on-year to 5.9 trillion yuan, while expenditure increased 10.7 percent or 528.5 billion yuan to 5.4 trillion yuan.

In breakdown, the total income from basic old-age insurance reached 5.7 trillion yuan, while expenditure stood at 5.2 trillion yuan, with an accumulated balance of nearly 6.3 trillion yuan.

Last year, the total income from unemployment insurance reached 128.4 billion yuan, while expenditure stood at 133.3 billion yuan, with an accumulated balance of 462.5 billion yuan.

Meanwhile, a total of 96,000 enterprises established enterprise annuities by the end of 2019, covering 25.48 million employees and with a balance of nearly 1.8 trillion yuan.
