Events set to mark Party's centenary

Regulations forthcoming on protecting, using resources related to CPC history

Shanghai, the birthplace of the Communist Party of China, will host a series of events in the coming months to celebrate the 100 anniversary of the Party's founding, the CPC Shanghai Municipal Committee announced on Thursday.

According to Zhou Huilin, head of the publicity department of the CPC Shanghai Committee, the Memorial of the Site of the First National Congress of the CPC will be open to the public before July 1, along with the kickoff on the same day of an exhibition featuring historical relics related to the Party's history.

The site hosted the initial session of the first CPC National Congress in July 1921, before the event was relocated to Nanhu Lake in Jiaxing, Zhejiang province. The congress approved the Party program, elected its central governing body and established the CPC.

Cooperating with local archives, galleries, museums and memorials, the city will also hold a series of exhibitions with different themes to show the Party's development in the past century, Zhou said.

"Shanghai is where the Party was founded, where the CPC Central Committee members once worked for a long time, and where the frontier of the nation's reform and opening-up lies, and is filled with rich resources regarding the Party's history," Zhou said.

Ranging from memorials of historical sites to former residences of leading members and martyrs' cemeteries, more than 612 cultural sites related to the Party can be found across the city, according to Zhou.

To protect the diverse revolutionary heritage, the city will issue regulations on promoting, protecting and utilizing resources related to the Party's history before July. The renovation of key historical sites and construction of memorials in Shanghai will be completed by then as well, according to Zhou. These will include the Memorial of the Site of the First National Congress of CPC and the former site of the editorial department of New Youth magazine, which initiated the New Culture Movement and served as the office for the Party's Central Committee in the 1920s.

A map marking landmarks related to the Party will also be launched soon. The city also pledged to jointly build a national 5A-level scenic spot－the highest level of tourist attraction in China－with the theme of the Party's development. This will include memorials of the sites of the first, second and fourth national congresses of the CPC. It will also promote the integrated development of tourism in the Yangtze River Delta.

Zhou said the city will hold a gala to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Party. A total of 413 shows with anniversary themes will be presented to the public by over 20 arts groups. Movies and TV series will also be aired.

Seminars will be held in the city to discuss related topics, such as the relationship between the city and the founding of the Party, Zhou added.
