Medical facilities reflect mainland engineering efficiency

Editor's notes: In a Tuesday lecture, Zhang Yi, CEO of China State Construction International Medical Industry Development Corp, shared with Hong Kong students the stories behind the construction of two Hong Kong medical facilities built with the nation's help to combat the COVID-19 pandemic.

North Lantau Hospital Hong Kong Infection Control Centre

Started operation on Feb 26, 2020

Building area: 44,000 square meters

Floor space: 29,000 square meters

Facilities: 6 ward buildings, 1 medical center building, 1 energy center building, 1 liquid oxygen station, 1 dangerous-goods warehouse and some other ancillary facilities

Beds: 816 negative-pressure isolation beds

Service life: Permanent building

China's first high-standard intelligent negative-pressure mobile cabin hospital

Started operation on Aug 1, 2020

Building area: 30,000 square meters

Facilities: 40 negative pressure isolation wards with a total of 160 beds

792 beds in general square cabins

32 communal facilities, including nurses stations

Provision of additional air-conditioning facilities

Beds: 952

Efficiency and safeguards of the two projects

-Finished 21 versions of designs in 7 days

-Shortened the construction period of the temporary hospital from 3 to 4 years to 4 months

-Cumulative number of workers on site exceeds 240,000, with over 4,000 workers worked on-site a day at the peak of the construction

-Over 200 subcontractors and 130 suppliers in Hong Kong served as a backup team

-Procured materials and equipment from nearly 20 countries or regions around the world. The transportation volume reached the loads of more than 40,000 trucks.
