Commissioner: US democracy summit a deception in essence
The upcoming "democracy summit" to be held by the United Stated is essentially a deception that aims to confuse right and wrong and coerce other countries to follow its flawed democracy model, Liu Guangyuan, the Foreign Ministry's commissioner in Hong Kong, said on Thursday.
He said those who intend to badmouth the democratic systems of China and its special administrative region of Hong Kong at the summit will be condemned to everlasting infamy as it has been proven that these democratic systems are effective and pragmatic.
Liu made the remarks during a seminar in Hong Kong on the essence of democracy.
The US will hold its Summit for Democracy from Dec 9 and 10.
Days before the seminar, China's central government released a white paper elaborating the characteristics of Chinese democracy system and a report on democracy in the United States. The report expressed hopes for the US to improve its system and practices of democracy and change its way of interacting with other countries, by exposing US' systematic deficiencies and abuse of democracy.
Liu noted that the US democracy is fraught with deep-seated problems, such as money politics and political polarization. Even the selection of the summit's participating countries and regions is unfair, as only those who recognize and upholds American democracy can attend, Liu said.
Liu said the summit is purely a scam to interfere with other countries' internal affairs on the pretext of democracy, and the world needs to be on high alert.
He also reiterated that no external force has the right to interfere with the Special Administrative Region's democratic development, which is purely China's internal affair. Any attempt to meddle with Hong Kong's upcoming Legislative Council election will be with responded with strong counteractions.
Addressing at the same event, Chen Dong, deputy director of the Liaison Office of the Central People's Government in the HKSAR, said the nation's Constitution has provided fundamental safeguards and broad development room for Hong Kong's democracy system.
He said Hong Kong is proceeding on the right course of democracy, and the system will be further improved with the legislative election in December.
Chen believes the new term of Legislative Council will promote more qualified and substantive democracy, foster legislative and executive relations that will better meet the requirements of the Basic Law, and better serve public interests.
Under the new landscape, he believes Hong Kong residents will properly exercise their rights to improve the city's democracy and the "one country two systems" policy will be steadily and successfully implemented.
