Since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, Xi has put protecting the people and their health above all else, underscoring that the nation will protect the health of the people at any cost. This emphasis was also laid out during Xi's deliberations at the two sessions in 2020 and last year.

Speaking with national political advisers from the education, medical and health sectors last year, he highlighted the importance of fortifying the nation's public health networks and promoting high-quality development of public hospitals to bolster healthcare for the public.

He set out requirements to solve problems in sectors including pharmaceuticals, medical equipment and vaccines, saying that the nation must continue to reform its healthcare insurance system to protect the people's savings.

As for the education sector, he emphasized socialist orientation in running schools, nonprofit education, and developing an education system that people are satisfied with.

Han Qiang, dean of Beijing Foreign Studies University's School of Marxism, said Xi has set the agenda for the reform of the nation's healthcare and educational systems at meetings with political advisers.

He noted that the president has also mentioned the most pressing issues in the sectors including: care and protection of medical workers; preventing harming the interests of the people in the name of education; and pointing out ways to solve similar issues in the future.

Wang, the associate professor, said Xi has closely aligned with public interests in giving priority to the development of high-quality healthcare and the education system.

"Healthcare and education are among the top concerns for the public. The nation has kept moving forward in its reforms in the sectors to give the people a greater sense of gain, which has truly reflected a people-centered governance approach," he said.
