China enters new role emphasizing carbon reduction

With growing concerns about climate change, the concept of green and low-carbon development has permeated all works of life in China, an ecologic expert said on Wednesday.

"China has entered a new phase with a primary strategic emphasis on carbon reduction," said Liu Bingjiang, chief engineer at the Ministry of Ecology and Environment, adding that the country will coordinate industrial restructuring, pollution control, ecological preservation and climate change response to drive a holistic green transformation.

The remarks were made at the home event in Changzhou, Jiangsu province, to mark National Low-carbon Day, which fell on Wednesday this year.

The event also showcased some representative examples of low-carbon development across China.

Gao Yun, secretary of Shangshufang community in Zhonglou district, Changzhou, said that, as part of the renovation of old residential areas, photovoltaic charging panels have been installed in the community to supply green electricity. In addition, the community has collected and purified rainwater for cyclic utilization.

Additionally, in Shenyang, Northeast China's Liaoning province, the BMW-Brilliance manufacturing base has introduced around 100 Artificial Intelligence applications and runs on renewable energy, implementing a digitized production process that is both low-carbon and efficient. Featuring a diverse range of trees, the base has become a habitat for nationally protected cattle egrets in North China and attracted visitors from both China and foreign countries, said You Chao from the BMW-China.
