Photographers flock to Yellow River estuary for migratory birds

The Yellow River estuary in Dongying, Shandong province, has entered its prime season for birdwatching as migratory birds arrive for the winter. The spectacle has drawn numerous photographers eager to capture the beauty of these winged visitors.

The region has witnessed a surge in wildlife populations due to significant environmental improvements. Official records indicate that the Yellow River Delta National Nature Reserve now hosts 374 bird species, establishing itself as a crucial hub for migratory birds.

Located at the confluence of the Yellow River and the Bohai Sea, Dongying has made substantial efforts in recent years to preserve the wetland ecology and biodiversity of the Yellow River estuary region. Various measures have been put in place to enhance wetland restoration and improve bird habitats. These include providing additional water resources to maintain wetland health, removing invasive cordgrass and restoring seagrass beds. Furthermore, initiatives have been launched to safeguard the habitats of key species like black-billed gulls and Oriental white storks.

The city launched its second Yellow River Estuary International Birdwatching season event on Tuesday and invited global experts to share their insights into migratory bird habitat protection and wetland preservation.

The event, scheduled to continue through January 2025, will feature a variety of birdwatching activities, including a photography competition and a birdwatching contest. These events offer opportunities to explore the city's biodiversity. Additionally, four designated birdwatching routes have been unveiled for enthusiasts to observe and document rare wild birds throughout the season.
