ETS announces TOEFL updates, new 1-6 score scale

Educational Testing Service recently announced a series of enhancements for the Test of English as a Foreign Language, including a new 1-6 score scale and faster reporting within 72 hours.

The updates, which began rolling out on Friday, are designed to make the exam more equitable, better reflect real-world academic English use and align more closely with global standards, the organization said.

Test takers using the TOEFL iBT Home Edition will see a redesigned system featuring live ETS-trained in-house proctors, AI-assisted identity verification and a simplified registration and check-in process. The changes are intended to make at-home testing smoother and more secure.

Beginning in January 2026, ETS will introduce a multistage adaptive format for the Reading and Listening sections, allowing the test to adjust in real time based on a student's performance. Traditional content will also be updated with more relevant and culturally accessible material to better reflect how English is used in academic settings.

To help institutions and students interpret results more easily, TOEFL will also begin in January reporting scores on the new 1-6 scale aligned with the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages, in addition to the traditional 0-120 scale.

ETS said it will provide training and support to ensure a smooth transition for admissions offices around the world.

The updates also include upgraded audio equipment in test centers globally, faster score reporting within 72 hours and new preparation materials to support the changes.

The updates are part of efforts to maintain the exam's academic integrity while making the testing process more inclusive, ETS said.

"Since 1964, TOEFL has helped millions unlock opportunities through global education and been the benchmark in high-stakes English testing," said Rohit Sharma, senior vice president of Global Mobility Solutions at ETS.

The new changes ensure that ETS maintains its high standards while meeting the evolving needs of students worldwide, he said.
