China urges US to facilitate continued fentanyl cooperation

China remains open to continued fentanyl cooperation with the United States and urges Washington to take concrete actions to create the necessary conditions for such cooperation, Foreign Ministry spokesman Guo Jiakun said on Wednesday.

Guo made the remarks at a daily news briefing after US President Donald Trump said he expected to lower tariffs on Chinese goods linked to the fentanyl crisis during his upcoming meeting with the Chinese president.

Earlier this year, the US government imposed a 20 percent tariff on Chinese exports, citing fentanyl concerns.

"China's position on this issue has always been consistent and clear," Guo said, adding that China is one of the most determined countries in combating drugs, with the most comprehensive policies and among the best records.

It is also among the countries that regulate the largest number of controlled substances under the strictest standards, he said.

China expresses sympathy for the American people suffering from the fentanyl crisis and has previously offered assistance, achieving positive results, Guo added.
