Tackling auto boom issues

Aware of the trend, many carmakers have been stepping up their efforts to develop clean energy cars.

At Auto China 2008, a wide array of fuel efficient, eco-friendly models were the focus of attention. They include the Toyota 1/X, the Cadillac Provoq, the Jeep Renegade, and the Lexus LF-Xh concept cars.

However, in order to solve these problems, "the solutions are not limited only to the automotive industry," Schiller said.

"In larger cities, more public transportation should be developed, such as subways. I have seen the Chinese government putting a lot of efforts into this."

Schiller added that better city planning and better traffic control can help with traffic jams.

China can also learn from some world cities such as London, which levies a congestion charge, Schiller said. "The practice might be feasible in big Chinese cities like Shanghai and Beijing."

The London congestion charge is a fee for some motorists traveling within certain parts of London designated as the Congestion Charge Zone.
