China Unicom racing to restore services

Updated: 2008-05-17 09:58 Most of the earthquake epicenter areas will have telecommunications restored this weekend, China Unicom executives said Friday. The country's second-largest mobile-phone-service operator had a total of 3,000 base stations damaged in Sichuan province by the May 12 quake. Some 700 base stations had resumed operations as of yesterday afternoon, according to the company. "We are trying our very best to recover the telecom services now. More than 70 percent of our base stations in Sichuan are back online," China Unicom Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Chang Xiaobing said.
All of China Unicom's base stations at or near the heavily hit town of Sichuan reported damages, with many stations shut down from power loss. The operator also lost the use of 500 base stations in neighboring Shaanxi province.
