Singapore transfers technology to earthquake-prone regions in China

Singapore's Nanyang Technological University (NTU) and Temasek Foundation are working together to bring earthquake resistance technology to China's earthquake-prone regions.

According to a statement by the NTU on Friday, the program aims to promote safer construction practices, achieve transfer of technology, and enhance the skills of those involved in China construction industry.

The S$1.7 million ($1.18 million) program will be implemented in China's Sichuan, Hebei and Liaoning provinces in the first phase, and Jiangsu, Shaanxi and Yunnan provinces in the second phase.

The program covers two aspects. The first involves the strengthening of school buildings to improve their resistance to earthquakes. The second aspect of the program involves working with local universities and authorities in each of the six provinces to train the local masons and equip them with cost- effective techniques to strengthen buildings.

In total, about 60 trainers and 240 local masons from the six provinces will be trained under this program.
