Migrant workers 'worst hit' by financial crisis

The manufacturing industry and migrant workers are suffering most in the unfolding financial crisis, Wei Chaoan, vice minister of of agriculture, said Thursday in a conference held on the sidelines of the second session of the 11th National People's Congress (NPC).

"China's economy slowed down together with the world economy, and its impact on our rural economy is deepening," Wei said. China's agricultural industry has suffered multiple blows from the financial crisis, and the high unemployment rate

of China's migrant workers, mainly coming from rural areas, is the foremost problem, he said.

Zhang Mingqi, vice chairman of the All China Federation of Trade Unions, said on Monday that over 20 million migrant workers have lost their jobs due to the global financial crisis.
