NPC press conference

The Second Session of the 11th National People's Congress (NPC) held its first press conference at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing on Wednesday. Li Zhaoxing, spokesman of the NPC, answered questions from reporters.

He mentioned that a 171-member presidium and secretary-general were elected to take charge of the procedures of the Second Session of the 11th National People's Congress (NPC), which is scheduled to last nine days.

Li also announced that Wang Zhaoguo was elected secretary-general of the NPC Session.

When asked about the economic stimulus package, Li said China’s 4 trillion-yuan (US$585 billion) economic stimulus package must be approved by the country's top legislature.

He added that the planned defense budget is 480.686 billion yuan.

This year's NPC Session is set to open on Thursday. Nearly three thousand deputies are expected to attend.
