Cultural heritage

Nigugu, a symbol made of clay from Xunxian in Henan province was displayed at Baosteel Stage on July 17. Nigugu is rendered in a simple, neat and graceful shape with various and balanced colors. It is also listed as part of the National Non-material Cultural Heritage of China. Other heritage pieces were also on exhibition. These included: ninigou (clay dogs) from Suiyang county; carved wooden New Year plates from Zhuxian county; paper cuttings from Sanmenxia; Bian style embroideries from Kaifeng city; Jade carvings from Zhengping; tiger illustrations from Shangqiu city; and peony flowers from Luoyang city.

Train of thought

If you ever dreamed of being a train driver, a visit to the China Railway Pavilion in Expo Garden is a must. An advanced training device is displayed at the pavilion and visitors can have a try. The device demonstrates that driving a train is not as easy as many people think. A train driver needs to operate a number of devices. For example, he or she needs to control the speed of a train by pulling several handles. Reading information from a monitor is also important to safe driving.

Wonder vote

Several pavilions in Expo Garden are promoting attractions in their home countries to attract visitors voting online for the New Seven Wonders of the World. The fierce competition for inclusion has been going on for a while. The Poland Pavilion has been promoting the Masurian Lake region; the Maldives Pavilion has installed computers for people to vote; and the Israel Pavilion displayed images of the Dead Sea. A total of 28 attractions have been short-listed and the final results will be announced on Nov 11, 2011. Visitors can go www.n7w.com to vote.
