The boutique hotel is also well-equipped to fully meet the needs of a new breed of business travelers and tech-savvy guests, boasting the latest Internet Protocol Phones and iPod docking station in each room.

"Today's luxury facilities, services and technology need very sophisticated platforms to work on and yesterday's electricity, wiring and plumbing are not robust enough to cope with demands," said Heintze. "Therefore, what the guest experiences today is the highest caliber of fabrics, textiles, hardware and technology available."

Whereas the original building had eight floors, over 200 guest rooms and a total area of 11,000 square meters, the restored version - smaller at just 96 rooms - is still big enough to rapidly grow its own niche in the city. Guests are attracted to the hotel not because of its size, but for its historical heritage and personalized service, said van den Oord.

"Because we're small, we are able to take care of every guest," he said, adding that this rings especially true for betrothed couples, who can enjoy a customized ceremony on the rooftop Pearl Room, a honeymoon in the deluxe 'Rose's Suite,' and a choice of three signature restaurants.

The hotel welcomes customers back to Shanghai's golden era with a special deluxe room rate of 1,900 yuan per night until the end of August.
