UN resolution basis to resolve Kosovo issue: Spokesman

China stressed yesterday that the UN Security Council's authority remained key to resolving problems relating to Kosovo's claim to independence and that both Serbia and Kosovo should continue negotiations.

"Security Council resolution 1244 is still the political and legal basis to resolve the Kosovo problem," Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesman Liu Jianchao told a regular news briefing, referring to the resolution adopted in 1999 which legitimized the UN authority to administer Kosovo.

"Any attempt to resolve this problem should comply with its relevant stipulations before any new resolution is passed."
