President Hu concludes trip in Canada

VANCOUVER (CP) - The president of China concluded a visit to Canada on
Saturday by recognizing the strategic importance of the two countries' access to
each other and the vital Pacific Rim marketplace. Canadian Press reported.

[Reuters] | "The Chinese government attaches great
importance to Asia Pacific regional co-operation," Hu Jintao told about 800
guests at a luncheon prior to departing for Beijing at the end of a 10-day trip
to North America.
"China and Canada are two important Pacific Rim countries," he reminded the
crowed gathered at a posh downtown hotel.
"The Asia Pacific region is our common home, and expanded co-operation
between Canada and China, with greater co-operation and development across the
region, serves the mutual interests of the Chinese and Canadian people and the
people in the region as a whole."
Hu's speech was preceded by another address by Prime Minister Paul Martin,
who told the Chinese president that a measure of his country's importance to
Western Canada - and the country as a whole - was the presence at the luncheon
of the premiers of the four western provinces and the Northwest Territories.
Martin mentioned several times that Western Canada in general, and B.C. in
particular, are the "Pacific Gateway" to China and other Asia Pacific markets.
