Shanxi was once the money transfer service center of banking and exchange shops in ancient China, and the term "Shanxi Merchant" was once pronounced the same with wealth in ancient Chinese. The well-preserved city of Pingyao in Shanxi is reminiscent of the busy commercial activities at that time. Shanxi holds a proven coal reserve of 260 billion metric tons, which accounts for one third of China's total reserve. As the leading producer of coal in China, Shanxi produces about 300 million metric tones of coal annually. Shanxi has also established a traffic and transportation network with railway as the backbone and supplemented by highway and airway. The transportation network directly connects Shanxi to Hong Kong and 40 other cities of the country.
