At least 12 people have died after a TransAsia airline plane, carrying 31 passengers from the Chinese mainland, crashed into a river in Taipei city in Taiwan.

A total of 58 people, including 51 adult passengers, two children and five crew members were on board domestic flight ATR-72, which clipped the Nanyang Bridge shortly after takeoff at 10:45 am on Feb 4.

Passengers travelling with two tourism groups from Xiamen, Fujian province are believed to have been on board the airplane.

A passengers list of 31 Chinese mainland citizens has been released, yet it is unknown if any of them are among the casualties of the crash.

Ten people have so far been rescued, according to Taiwan official report, and rescuers teams alongside the plane in the Keelung River are trying to rescue a number of people still trapped inside the plane.

Some tens of passengers are still waiting for rescue in the remains of floating plane body. Some passengers swam ashore. A car was also hit when the plane hit the bridge.

A similar plane – the ATR72-222 - crashed in Taiwan’s Penghu county on July 23, 2014, leaving 48 dead, 10 heavily injured, and five injured in 11 residential buildings.
