Gansu Tibetan art, Chinese folk customs in UK exhibit

A two-day exhibition of tangka art and photographs of folk customs in Northwest China’s Gansu province opened in London to help the British understand Chinese culture and history.

The exhibition, which was invited by the British General Chamber of Commerce and put on by the Gansu International Culture Association, shows photos of beautiful natural scenes in China and tangka art, a style of Tibetan art that involves painting on embroidery.

The exhibit consists of 60 photos and six works of tangka art, some of which were on display in other countries, including Russia and Mexico.

"The cultural exchange provides a chance for the British to know China and Gansu, and it is significant to strengthen mutual communication between the two nations, as well as promote the economies of the two countries," said Fan Peng, vice-chairman of the association.

"Although information, especially pictures, broadcast fast in the current Internet era, the original works, are still charming and can show the features of Gansu," Fan said, adding that the exhibition was also an important part of Gansu's international culture activities this year.

After the UK, the exhibit will go to Vienna.
