US police identify suspect in Mother's Day shooting
HOUSTON - Police said Monday they have identified a suspect in the shooting spree at the Mother's Day parade in New Orleans on Sunday that injured 19 people.
Police were looking for 19-year-old Akein Scott, who was identified by multiple people as the shooter, Police Superintendent Ronal Serpas said.
"The time has come for him to turn himself in," Serpas told a news conference Monday outside police headquaters, adding it was too early to say if Scott was the only suspect.
Police earlier said the incident appeared to have involved three gunmen and at least two different weapons.
Serpas said police had received several tip-offs from the community after announcing a $10,000 reward and releasing blurry surveillance camera images earlier Monday.
Ten men, seven women and two 10-year-olds were wounded Sunday afternoon when shots rang out at an impromptu community procession, known as a "second line" parade, in which people dance down the street behind an official parade.
Surveillance video shows the crowd dispersing and some falling to the ground before a person in a white T-shirt and dark pants flees.
Officials said many of the victims suffered grazes, and most of the wounds are not life-threatening.
Three victims remained in hospital in critical condition Monday, a hospital spokesman said.
New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu has urged anyone with information about the shooting to come forward.
