Senior official urges more efforts to develop rule of law

A senior official emphasized on Saturday the importance of advancing law-based governance in all areas and called for all efforts to be made to further develop the rule of law for the new era.

Guo Shengkun, member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee and head of the Commission for Political and Legal Affairs of the CPC Central Committee, made the point during a meeting with law experts and scholars.

The meeting was held after President Xi Jinping directed the first meeting of the Commission for Law-based Governance of the CPC Central Committee on Aug 24, calling for a stronger and more unified Party leadership in advancing law-based governance in all areas.

The new ideas, new thinking and new strategies put forward since the Party's 18th National Congress, including strengthening the Party's leadership over the rule of law and ensuring the principal status of people, must be held in the long run and developed continuously, Xi said.

Guo said the new ideas, new thinking and new strategies were an important part of Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era, and served as fundamental guidance to deepen the practice of law-based governance.

It is also an important task to study and practice the rule of law according to Xi's guidance, adhere to the centralized and unified leadership, and carry out the seven key tasks of advancing law-based governance to speed up the establishment of a system of socialist rule of law with Chinese characteristics.

"All law experts and scholars should be practitioners, developers and contributors to cultivate more law talents and make new contributions to the great practice of rule of law," he said.
