Chinese audit chief attends UN review meeting in NY

The 55th Special Session of the UN Board of Auditors and the 65th Session of the UN Panel of External Auditors took place at United Nations Headquarters in New York from Monday to Tuesday.

Hou Kai, a member of both the UN Board of Auditors and the UN Panel of External Auditors, as well as the Auditor General of the National Audit Office of China, attended the meetings.

At the special session of the Board of Auditors, participants reviewed the report on work conducted in the latter half of 2025, discussed the 2026 audit plan, and deliberated matters referred by United Nations legislative bodies.

Hou stated that the Board had achieved solid results this year, contributing to the United Nations' reform efforts, management enhancement and governance improvement. He hoped that in the first half of 2026, the Chinese audit team would continue to uphold independence and professionalism to fulfill the mandate from the UN General Assembly, ensuring continuity and high-quality outcomes before he concludes his six-year term as a member of the Board.

During the Panel of External Auditors session, Hou exchanged views with other members and UN officials on key areas, including priorities under the UN80 Initiative, financial and administrative issues, digital transformation, and audit practices across the UN system.

In New York, Hou also visited ongoing Chinese audit operations at the UN Secretariat and met with Chinese auditors on-site. He encouraged the team to adhere to international auditing standards, leverage their strengths in economic oversight, focus on their main responsibilities, and contribute to building a more efficient, transparent, and sustainable United Nations.
