Hong Kong's Legislative Council election held successfully

The successful completion of the new Legislative Council election of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region reflects the will of the people and marks a significant milestone in advancing democracy in Hong Kong, said a spokesperson for the Hong Kong and Macao Affairs Office of the State Council in a statement on Monday, extending congratulations.

The eighth-term Legislative Council election of the Hong Kong SAR was held on Sunday. Voter turnout in the Election Committee constituency, the functional constituencies and the geographical constituencies all far exceeded that of the previous term, indicating broad recognition and strong support across Hong Kong society, according to the spokesperson.

The spokesperson noted that the recent deadly fire in Tai Po during the campaign period dealt a severe blow to Hong Kong. The SAR government responded promptly, mobilizing emergency teams and carrying out relief and follow-up support work in an efficient and well-coordinated manner.

"With the concerted efforts of the SAR government, all sectors of society and the broad electorate, this election achieved complete success," the spokesperson said. The election showcased the unity and resilience of Hong Kong society in overcoming challenges, and underscored the advanced and effective nature of the new electoral system under the comprehensive implementation of the principle of "patriots administering Hong Kong", the spokesperson added.

Chief Executive John Lee Ka-chiu and the SAR government carried out all electoral arrangements in strict accordance with the law, adopting multiple innovative measures and effectively coordinating election work with ongoing disaster relief efforts, the spokesperson said.

The spokesperson said that the newly elected Legislative Council members are all patriots who love Hong Kong — capable, responsible, committed to public service, and recognized and supported by the vast majority of voters.

"We hope and believe the new Legislative Council members will fully, accurately and unswervingly implement the 'one country, two systems' policy, put national sovereignty, security and development interests first, and uphold the executive-led governance system," the spokesperson said.

The spokesperson added that they are expected to manage the relationship between the executive and the legislature effectively, support the chief executive and the SAR government in governing according to the law, remain closely attuned to public needs, and foster a broad consensus to drive reform, advance post-disaster recovery, enhance governance, and promote Hong Kong's long-term prosperity and stability.

The election results were announced on Monday. The new Legislative Council comprises 90 members: 40 elected by the Election Committee, 30 by functional constituencies, and 20 by geographical constituencies through direct elections. The eighth-term Legislative Council will begin its four-year term on Jan 1.
