Pets in vogue

Freezing cold has swept across the city of Beijing and the temperature has dropped to nearly zero degree by day.

As we are putting on much warmer clothes, a lot of people have also dressed up their pets to protect them against the bad weather.

In just five years, the angora ferret has made its mark among local pet owners.

Five years ago, there was only a handful of angora ferrets kept as pets in Beijing - all brought in by expatriates from either the United States or Europe.

Today, there are more than 1,000 longhaired angora ferrets in Beijing - with most living comfortably in the homes of local Chinese.

A story about a cat seller

Feng Yan has sold cats for over 10 years. He has a room for raising the cats next to his apartment, and likes all the living animals.

Feng said you have to like it no matter what you do.

He never looks at his cats as a commodity but rather considers all the cats are his pets.

Beijing's pets are Beijing's children

With his stomach swinging like a pendulum as if marking the passage of time, the ever-expanding pig, named Laifu, is a perfect example of China's expanding pet economy, and the solace and companionship a pet may bring its owner in an urban environment.
