By the end of 2010, the length of railway in service in China has exceeded 90,000 km; the total length of express passenger railway has exceeded 20,000 km, and the total capacity for transporting coal amounted to 1.8 billion tons; the total length of railway in western regions has reached 35,000 km, and forms a national container transport network.

As for the construction of high-speed railway, the length of railway in service has reached 7,531 km, which means China is currently ranked first in the world.
